Numerous generals and historians have attested to the role of morale in victory on the battlefield. Kraines contends that due to their fanaticism, and consequent high morale, the Germans and Japanese stood out as the best combatants of World War Two. There are numerous definitions on morale, however. Writers are unanimous on the fact that an important psychological attitude must be impressed upon the soldier by his leader, if he is to operate efficiently under stressful conditions. This view is the basis of this article. The importance of high morale, as a quality of the mind and spirit is discussed thoroughly. The concept of morale as seen by various writers, is conveyed, and attention is given to the aspects of psychological, emotional, physical and job satisfaction. The aspect of personnel training is highlighted, while the importance of good leadership, and a belief in the cause that is being fought for is also stressed. ER -
